SYNOPSIS--
Zac Hobson wakes one morning to discover himself alone. Totally alone-- the only man left alive, as far as he can tell, on the surface of the earth.
This is not the result of a nuclear disaster or a global plague. No bodies litter the landscape; buildings, vehicles, trees and plants, all are untouched. But Zac discovers a world eerily emptied of all human and animal life.
It is, he begins to discover, a world he himself has helped create. A New Zealand scientist, working on an experiment sponsored by the U.S. Defense Department, Zac had helped to develop a worldwide energy grid for military purposes. Now, he finds that humanity's disappearance coincided with the grid's first use-- that the grid has caused the distortion in the fabric of space-time that resulted in the annihilation of humanity.
Zac, overcome with guilt and loneliness, goes briefly mad, then struggles back to sanity. His trained mind begins to work on two problems: why has he survived this global holocaust? And if there is anyone else left alive, how can he find them?
He eventually finds two: a young woman named Joanne, and Api, a Maori man. As they reach their own uneasy balance, Zac makes yet another shattering discovery: that the grid is still in place, and unless they find a way to deactivate it, it will result in the destruction of the planet itself.
