Subject: Brass rags and fish slices

When the wedding is removed from the agenda, the formerly-affianced
parties are said to have ``parted brass rags''.  I'm smart enough to
figure out why I can't find any bespoke tailors in this town, but I'm
not smart enough to figure out where the brass rags come from.

And is there any significance to the fact that after the
reconciliation, Bertie always provides a fish slice?  I mean, as
opposed to any other habitual and relatively useless gift.
