FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LIBERTARIAN SECOND AMENDMENT CAUCUS ON OKLAHOMA EXPLOSION However tragic and reprehensible the disaster in Oklahoma City today, it is obvious that the Clinton/Reno Administration perceive it as a political opportunity, not only for the re-election hopes of one of history's most discredited presidents, but as a chance to transform their inherent inability to prevent such disasters into another justification to increase the size, power, and intrusiveness of government. Feeding upon human calamity this way is in the basic nature of all governments, and constitutes one reason Libertarians wish to see them stringently curtailed. The mass media in particular have a solemn responsibility -- and if they wish to restore their own badly-damaged credibility, should make it their principal business -- to ensure that the Clinton/Reno administration do not profit from this tragedy. Although no indication exists yet as to the responsibility for this violent act, one thing is certain: it is a result, not of insufficient government, but of too much. If it is the work of Moslem terrorists, for example, it would never have occurred without unconstitutional United States interference in the Middle East. If it is in retaliation for the state terrorism committed two years ago in Waco, Texas, the same is true. These catastrophes never happened in America as long as the government maintained at least a semblance of compliance with the Constitution. Today, a mere semblance of compliance is no longer enough. The only way to prevent such tragedies in the future is to enforce the Bill of Rights. Americans should be reassured or advised -- whichever is appropriate -- that any political advantage taken by the current administration in this affair will be reversed by a future Libertarian government, and those responsible for seizing upon this excuse to weaken the Constitution further will be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowed by the highest law of the land.
