Professor Piddler,
"as crummy as we are when we're awake"? Glad to see that you're
speaking for yourself and not others.

If I recall correctly, one idea is that they steal the seed
of men and transfer it to others (succubi may even become
incubi for this purpose)---maybe they're the mythological
equivalent of adenoretroviruses (?whatever!? those little
guys that do the gene-splicing). Succubi seem to be in
the vampire camp (but less dangerous than lamiae), but I'm
not sure whether that's a late development. I think they
are first found in Hebrew mythology, but may go back farther.
Ain't it great what D&D can teach you!

They may just be an attempted explanation of [EXCUSE FOR :-)]
wet dreams. Like "Well, fella, you seem to have had a little
fun last night." "Not me, man, I was attacked by a demon!
It was terrible!" I'd have been proud to have made up that
line of BS.

One thing for sure, succubi can't be doing it for pleasure:
as crummy we are when we're awake, when a guy's asleep---
Jeez Louise!

Be seeing you,

P.S. I was an orc, but my answers were all over the place.
