Lee,
The serious answer is that D&D universes include a race called
Half-Elves so called because their parentage is mixed Human and Elven. This
is based on a couple of J.R.R. Tolkien characters described as "Half Elven"
because of their mixed heritage. In Tolkien, however, the characters were
exceptional and did not constitute a separate race. The Star Trek universe
includes a number of similar characters, noteably Mr. Spock, especially
since the Vulcans are based on the mythological Elven race. Like Spock, the
D&D Half-Elves are often depicted as seriously conflicted about which
culture they fit into. So, one response to your question is "That's what
I'm trying to work out."

Lee (D&D Player since 1976)

Another mailing list I'm on posted a link to a "What D&D character are you?"
test: http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~ellingwd/dndwho/

It turns out I'm a Chaotic Good Half-Elf Bard Ranger. Which is close to what

I
usually play in those kinds of games! (although I am frequently more of a
magic-user)
