Herewith some of the objectives I've seen, in a rough order:

The convention should earn enough to cover its expenses, so that no
individuals (or clubs) incur any direct costs.

The convention should provide various amenities to its attendees: fun,
entertainment, companionship, a certain amount of sustenance (free food),
and maybe even some education.

Ideally the convention should provide some surplus funds for use of the
poor bas- um, noble soul who volunteers to put on the next one.

And finally, it is nice if the convention is in a financial position to
make a cash contribution to the local science fiction club, so that there
might be a high quality of food, BEER, etc at meetings for the next year or
three.

In the past we have generally managed to find enough individuals to deal
with the Headaches and Work to accomplish these humble goals. Some of them
even derived some personal satisfaction from the effort.
