Forgot to mention a more recent time travel story that worked for me:
Connie Willis' "To Say Nothing of the Dog," which is a slightly
different slant on her short story "Firewatch" and her Hugo-winning
novel, "Domesday Book." These are time travel using machines (from
Oxford in the relatively near future) to take historians back into the
eras they studied -- the Victorian era, the bombing in WWII, or the
1300s.
