The pare part is why I never got past the first couple
of chapters in the first book.  And never read
anything else by the author.
OTOH, he must have been doing something right because
my brother read the entire series enthusiaticly, and
at the time he was the world's most unenthusiastic
reader (basically, except for stuff he had to read to
avoid flunking out of JHS/HS he wasn't reading
anything).
