The equal Rights Amendment was a proposed constitutional amendment worded
as follows:

**************************************************
Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the
United States or by any state on account of sex.
**************************************************

It was controversial because it seemed to open the door to court
challenges of any legislation or government policy which distinguishes
between males and females. The male-only draft, for example, would be
out. Since race-specific toilets are illegal in public accomodations,
perhaps gender-specific toilets would become illegal.
