CDs seem to be surprisingly tolerant of light scratches on the clear
plastic side, perhaps because the IR beam at the surface of the plastic
is much broader than it is at the focal point on the aluminum side of the
plastic disk.  Of course the data interleaving and error correction codes
also help with that.
