Erica,

I have no problem with thinking of it either way.  In many cases, if you
look at the historical record, there are instances of the attributes of
the local gods in various places being carried over into the attributes
of the saints who were supposed to have lived in those places later on,
or to have appeared there (such as some of the Marian apparitions,
particularly the older ones.)  And I don't think we need to sort out the
political economy of deity in order to work with it, (or against it or
ignore it) in one way or another.
