Perhaps we should all chip in to buy Pullman a backpack fire extinguisher.
He could then perambulate in safety. ;)

I am reminded of Lester del Rey's story "For I Am A Jealous People."

If the religious nuts were to read the del Rey story they might feel =
inclinded to dig him up and burn him post-mortem.

The same with Philip Pullman; if the loons who believe that the Potter =
books teach witchcraft (oh, dear, this could lead to the collapse of the =
Republic . . .) were to read "His Dark Materials" trilogy, well, they'd be =
on the first flight to Oxford to burn the dear boy at the stake.
