You say the detector is designed to detect gamma rays, or any ionizing radiation which is penetrating enough to enter the ionization chamber. Was the intended use of the detector to measure radioactive fallout? There were a large number of such detectors made and distributed to public fallout shelters in the 1950s and 1960s. Does the detector have a cumulative event counter which will work unattended? If so, perhaps if it were left running outdoors for a few hours, it would detect cosmic rays, maybe something like one per hour.
