Last I checked, Sprint nominally covers about 1% of the land/water area
of the 48 contiguous states, but it is of course the 1% which is most
heavily populated, as well as most of the length of the interstate
highway system.  A few stretches of interste out west are not covered.

Analog cell service, on the other hand, covers some 85% or 90% of said
land area.  Some people get combo analog/digital phones with their
digital-only  service, knowing that in a pinch they can make an analog
call from just about anywhere, by giving a credit card number to the
local operator and paying a small fortune for the call.  911 calls are
free, I think, no matter what.
