A few stretches of interste out west are not covered. Analog cell service, on the other hand, covers some 85% or 90% of said land area. Some people get combo analog/digital phones with their digital-only service, knowing that in a pinch they can make an analog call from just about anywhere, by giving a credit card number to the local operator and paying a small fortune for the call. 911 calls are free, I think, no matter what.
