I grew up in Kansas, and I'm still not sure of its reality quotient.  A
couple of years ago, I went back to the itty bitty town in the middle of
nowhere that I did some growing up in (Elkhart).  It has a gay bar now.
  Guy at the restaurant (note singular) said that they were getting a
local internet service provider;  that didn't seem to work (I can't find
it now).

Then again, Delaware has its oddities.  Bethany Beach, for example,
advertises itself as a "family" (boring) resort, but it has its own
strangeness (see http://www.beach-net.com/history/totempole.html.  It's
actually much uglier than the picture.)
