The problem with the SciFi channel's explaination is
that one year ago in the press release in which they
announced a 44 episode order for Farscape, they stated
that viewership had been steadily increasing, esp.
among female viewers, which was a demographic they
were trying to attract.  Also, CNN had a brief peice
on the cancellation, and Farscape is apparently the
second highest rated show on the SciFi channel, so I
don't really think the ratings/viewership is the real
issue.  Nor do I think they could have been surprised
by the "rising costs" since those would have been
taken into account with the 44 epsiode order 9even
allowing for Hollywoods notoriously peculiar
accounting practices).  I think money may have been an
issue in that Vivendi, the company which bought USA
Networks is apparently having financial problems, but
of course no company is going to say "we're reneging
on a previous agreement because we're strapped for
cash"
