When riding an elevator with a friend and one or more strangers, Alfred
Hitchcock used to enjoy recounting some hair-raising portion of a story,
timing the delivery such that Hitchcock and friend would arrive at their
floor and exit the elevator just when the story had reached its most
suspenseful juncture. The victim never gets to hear the resolution.
