The announcement states that the lead is a detective investigating a
crime possibly committed by a robot... which sounds more like _The Caves of
Steel_ or _The Naked Sun_ than _I, Robot_. The story was originally called
_Hardwired_ and that story was fused with _I, Robot_ when Fox bought the
rights to the latter. Various alarms are starting to pulse softly in my
head.

They'd have to really adapt this to make it work with Will Smith in the lead
role -- unless he's playing Susan Calvin.

It begins:

"Wednesday, December 4, 2002 Posted: 9:32 AM EST (1432 GMT)

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Fox has
booked Will Smith to star in sci-fier
"I, Robot," an adaptation of the
1940s Isaac Asimov short-story
collection that set the groundwork
for robot films ranging from "The
Terminator" to "A.I.," Variety
reports.

Shooting is to begin in April. Alex Proyas,
whose last large-canvas projects were
"Dark City" and "The Crow," will direct the
film."

Proyas directing gives me hope; "Dark City" was a really good flick.
