Dear Folks,

Last night I showed several of you -- those who know Steve Stiles (a
long-time fan, superb artist and all-round Good Guy) -- a letter Stiles had
published in Tuesday's Baltimore SUN. However, the letter as the SUN
published it was unfortunately edited and deleted Steve's best line.

Here's the letter as it appeared in the SUN:

"Mona Charen's column "Marching against America"
was a nostalgic, if somewhat nausea-inducing,
blast from the past. Once again we hear that a protest
march against war is all the work of those all-too-familiar
outside agitators and communists -- reds who have hypnotized
soggy-minded liberals into anti-American fervor.

"I suppose it's too much to expect that Ms. Charen will ever
acknowledge that there are Americans of every political
stripe who are legitimately opposed to war when it runs
against America's best interests and finer instincts.

"Or that it's possible to be a patriot and work for peace."

And here's the letter as Steve originally wrote it:

"Reading Mona Charen's column ("Marching against America,"
Jan. 27, 2003) was a nostalgic, if somewhat nausea-inducing,
blast from the past. Once again we're hearing that a protest
march against war is all the work of those all too familiar
outside agitators, Die-Hard Communists, who have hypnotized
soggy-minded liberals into spasms of anti-American fervor.
(Great Lenin's Ghost, those commies sure took a licking but
still keep on ticking!)

"I suppose it's too much to expect that Ms. Charen will ever
acknowledge that there are Americans of every political
stripe who are legitimately opposed to a war that runs
against America's best interests and finer instincts, and
that efforts to keep the peace can be every bit as
patriotic, if not more so, than a rush into war."

Note that the SUN totally rewrote the closing line.
