I did this last year. They give you the books, and all you have to do is write a page long letter and email it off.

There is a slightly complicated application,  mainly so they can make sure you don't have an unhealthy interest in corresponding with an elementary school student you will never actually meet.

It was a great deal of fun, and involves reading all of 6 very short children's books a year. Let me know if you have any questions.
