Hello WSFAns, Zahra Agnes Miles was born at about 10:35 a.m. Thursday, weighing (after a prolonged gluttonous indulgence at both spigots) 6 lb. 7 oz. She has a good bit of dark hair (which will go soon), and eyes that look to me more Argani than Miles. Not too much crying yet, likes being held. A fairly civil creature so far. Sholey had increasing pain the night before, so we went to the Washington Hospital Center a bit after 2 a.m. She got her epidural 3:30ish, had a quiet few hours, and finally pushed like crazy for about an hour and a half before the birth. The doctor was close to calling for a C-section when the baby's head popped through (helped by a suction cup on her scalp). He pulled her the rest of the way out, sucked the goop out of he nose and mouth and she started breathing pronto with one little cry. After foolin' around on the first name for months we went for Zahra Agnes Miles. Zahra means "shining" or something like that; Agnes is my favorite aunt (Agnes means "lamb"---"Hey baby, want me to shine your lamb?" sounds like something Gardner Dozois might say in a dark corridor of a rundown hotel). The young women came home from the hospital about 1 p.m. today (Saturday). Sholey was in good spirits afterward and is recovering well. The baby is an enthusiastic eater, but is not as keen on bathing. Tonight we find out what life will really be like. Yup. -------------------------------------- Oh yeah. Who do you gotta know to get your kid on "Sesame Street" for an interview by Elmo? Be seeing you, -- =========================================================== Walter A.
