I was about to send this off to my brother, who has horses, when I vaguely
remembered some Brit or another referring to their horse having 'bombed' at
a show.  Probably when I was quite young as I haven't been around
horse-owning Brits since then, and I may be wrong, but it fits.

Until then I was imagining all sorts of things.  And getting somewhat nervous.
