It sounds (not a lawyer!) like they're claiming that the payment was
unearned, but simply being given to you to keep it out of the hands of more
legitimate creditors, such as the folks who hired this outfit.  You might
make a convincing case for being "judgement proof," in that the expense to
them of pursuing you in court could not be met even if all of your assets
were seized.  This might be accomplished by a conversation with whoever
sent the letter.  Don't know what the market value is of all that gear you
mentioned, but you could probably find some  pretty low estimates--it's not
current technology.
