Why not use TeX or one of its derivatives (LaTeX, ConTeXt, Lollypop,
Omega)?  It's free,
available on nearly any computing system people are likely to use, and
uses a
simple text-only format.  It's public domain; I can donate an old
TeXLive DVD,
and you can download it from the CTAN.  You can even buy books with
printouts
of the source code.  I know LunaCon has used it in the past.

I can give lessons, if necessary.  It really isn't that hard.

Adobe InDesign uses some of the algorithms of TeX.
