Pat Wrede has come very interesting titles: The Enchanted forest trilogy (Dealing Withdragons/Searching for Dragons/Calling on Dragons/Talking to Dragons) is good for both the children and the young lady might enjoy <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0765342324/qid=1098923445/sr=8-4/ref=pd_csp_4/103-9908561-0917461?v=glance&s=books&n=507846>Mairelon the Magician. How about Terry Prachett's _Wee Free Men_? The main character is a 7 year old girl, but the writing is on several levels and very funny! There is a sequel _Hat full of sky_ which is a bit more serious and the main character is 11. Neil Gaiman's _Coraline_ is dark, but very popular so maybe the gentleman would like that.
