Last month, I sat at a table with Holly Black after the
National Book Festival. Last week I found her YA book
"Tithe" at the public library. Its very good. The
characters are surprizing realistic and detailed. Read
it, its short, and fast, with a simple plot, and very good
style.
The main character is 16 and has a mother who sings at
bars, and drinks, and moves around. She is rather
aimless, not really having any ambitions, and has dropped
out of school out of inertia. It was too hard having her
transcript moved from one school to another. The only
really unique part about Kate is that she used to speak to
faeries as a child. Now she meets another one, not one of
the solitary harmless fae, but a knight of the unSeelie
Court.
