The Laysan spends nine months out of each year at sea, and only returns to dry land during mating season. Laysans who have yet to regain their land legs are famous for truly balletic landings, hence their nickname. During the summer months they literally carpet Midway atoll, and other islands of the western end of the Hawaiian chain.
