Cc: John at bungalow.org Reply-To: WSFA members <WSFAlist at WSFA.org> At the last meeting, Elspeth asked if we were exempt from sales tax. Sam Lubell said he would ask John Pomeranz. I'll leave Maryland and DC law to others, but I do keep a close eye on Virginia's laws (in much the same way as a mouse keeps a close eye on a snake), so I can answer that, and save John some time and effort. Yes. It's a very new law (July of this year), so it may not be in whatever lawbooks John has at home, but under §58.1-609.11, if we fill out the appropriate paperwork we should be exempt from regular sales taxes in Virginia. I don't think this applies to hotel taxes, unfortunately. Food and (non-alcoholic) drink for off-premises consumption are already free of sales taxes in Maryland, for everyone. I'm not sure what else we routinely purchase, other than copying costs for the WSFA Journal. Tax exemption would save us a couple dollars a month on that.
