Next time > you go into a B&N, take a look. Some years ago I was solicited (by Ed Gorman) to write a 3,000-word "cat story" for a mystery collection devoted to cats, to be published by B&N. For various reasons, I did not end up with a story in that book, but my friend (and fellow Vicious Circle member) Dave Owen, did. I looked at his copy of the book. It was a hardcover and it had *100* 3,000-word stories in it. It was printed in small type on almost Bible-thin paper. Dave's story was lost among all the others. He, like all the contributors, was paid $90 (or 3¢ a word) for his story. I'm sure B&N made money on this project, but I think it was a loser for all else concerned. --Ted White
