Heinlein himself was originally his best editor.  He typically wrote 150%
of a novel and then cut it down to published size.  Apparently he did this
less and less after STRANGER, as he became more self-indulgent, until by
TIME ENOUGH FOR LOVE he wasn't cutting anything at all (and 90% deserved
cutting).
