Actually, until the internet went truly public, business use of the internet for advertising was prohibited and about the only business use it had was dealing with government agencies by government contractors. Even in the early 90s when I got access there were still lots of discussions about the new commercial use of usenet and news, and many who resented it deeply. Strangely, one of the most enabling technologies for SPAM was DNS. Back when you had to pretty much specify the routing in the mail address it would have been too complicated to blind SPAM people. Now you can just send to every-name-you-can-think-of at every-domain-you-can-find. I get dozens of such attempts on my domain every day. -- Mike B. -- Why do irons have a setting for permanent press?
