I was rereading some of my collection lately. I've got a
couple of authors to recommend which weren't wildly
popular but are easy to read. These aren't old Classics,
for that you should ask Ted White.
For Fantasy try "Laurie J. Marks"
and for SF try "Edward Llewellyn".

Of course its nice to read authors that everyone reads
so that you can find someone to discuss the books with. I
liked the early Andre Norton, including historical
fiction, but got tired of the Witch World books after the
first half dozen.
Has anyone read Sheri Tepper? The last couple of
books seem to imply it would take alien intervention to
save humanity from itself. The SF equivalents of Deus Ex
Machina.
