Wow! I'm afraid I have to agree with Colleen and Neil. I consider The
Stars My Destination one of the truly classic reads and have reread it
about once every ten years since the 60s.

In the interests of conversation and in no real order, I consider the
following to be favorite reads for various reasons:

--- SciFi ---
The Stars My Destination - Alfred Bester
The City and the Stars - Arthur C. Clarke
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
The Mote in God's Eye - Niven and Pournelle
Ringworld - Larry Niven
Callahan's Cross Time Saloon - Spider Robinson
Time Enough for Love - Robert Heinlein
Neuromancer - William Gibson

--- Fantasy ---
Onion Girl - Charles DeLint
Another Fine Myth - Robert L. Asprin
Rameses the Damned - Anne Rice
The Kushiel Trilogy - Jacqueline Carey
Agyar - Steven Brust
The Camulod Chronicles - Jack Whyte

I would also include as 'satisfying fun' almost anything by:
Jerry Pournelle
Larry Niven
Spider Robinson
Ben Bova
Anne Rice
Vernor Vinge

I'm also well aware of the fact that successful SciFi and Fantasy
authors seem to loss the ability to count and good trilogies suddenly
have 5 to 8 novels. What the heck... It's all part of the fun.
