Are we talking about the longest a show has been off the air before
returning, or the longest a show has run?

If the latter, the record is held by "Meet the Press," an NBC series
which has been running for the past 58 years.

If the former, there's room for argument, due to reuse of series
names. Battlestar Galactica was off the air for 25 years before
returning last year. That beats Dr. Who, which was only down for
20 years. But I gather that Battlestar Galactica is a fresh start,
i.e. a remake, not a continuation, of the old series, but that the
new Dr. Who *is* a continuation.

I'm pleased to see that the Dr. Who watching society has unexpectedly
come back to life. I'll resume listing their events on our calendar
of upcoming events as soon as they get their website (which is still
online from their previous incarnation) up to date.
