I would guess that there's a standard "template" that got set up, with your main page as the home page, but the rest is still just the template. Yes, he probably figured you'd go in and change things as necessary, and that by providing a template to be modified he was helping you out. Even without photographs, some updates to personalize it a bit should be fairly simple to do...even if you just get rid of the links to things that aren't set up yet and send them all to an "under construction" page that explains that things aren't set up completely yet. What sort of interface for editing the pages does the site have/require? Is it just a matter of FTP'ing some new files into your area? Or do you have to use some specific tool or CGI at the site? If it's just FTP, then just putting up your old HTML file should get you your old site back if it was just a single page.
