Exactly.  It allows you to read the post and if you need a referent, it is
right there.  And if you don't, then you don't need to read the old
stuff.  It is simplicity itself to tell where the new stuff ends and old
stuff begins, so unless someone is interspersing, all you have to do is
read the post and ignore the rest.
