In this case, it was decidely not the case.  If you
take a look at this month's Locus interview with
Susanna Clarke or even the excerpts from the interview
at
http://www.locusmag.com/2005/Issues/04Clarke.html
you'll see that Neil Gaiman was a proponent and
supporter of the book even before it was a book.
