I went directly from work to the meeting, and didn't check my email. Sorry. Well, not quite directly, but I didn't go home in between. It's possible to check my email from work, so I'll make it a point to do so just before I head directly from work to a WSFA meeting, which I expect I'll do more often than not. I won't have time to do more than glance at the email, however, and to send a pre-written reply if necessary (e.g. directions to the meeting). (The telnet application turns every <CR> I type into a <CR><LF>, which makes it difficult to do much. Does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks.) It's also possible to look at web pages. I pulled up CNN's page this afternoon after hearing what sounded like a military jet. It was -- a small plane wandered into DC's airspace, and the Capitol and White House were evacuated. (My office is just a couple blocks from the White House.) This was, and still is, their top headline, implying that nothing more important happened anywhere in the world today. You might be interested to know that what I was proofreading at the time was the minutes of a meeting of the new Convention Center's commission. It had been transcribed by Lynn Steffan, an SF fan who got Ted White his job there. (Last month Ted got me my job there, working alongside him. Lynn works offsite.) Lynn apologized for the noise on the tape -- someone had the nervous habit of constantly clicking a pen. I didn't find the noise troublesome. The previous night, at home, I had transcribed and proofread the WSFA meeting minutes. The latter half was difficult because someone -- I'm sure you can guess who -- had gotten ahold of some bubble wrap and was popping it close to my tape recorder. And while riding Metro between home and work, guess what I've been doing? That's right -- more proofreading! This time, of the _Future Washington_ anthology. I'm more than half done with it. I finally figured out how to get the application at work to display light text on a black background, which makes it much easier and more pleasant to use. (I'm plagued with "floaters," and when I look at a light background, I see lots of blurry blobs darting around randomly, like a web page cluttered with animated pop-ups, out of focus, constantly moving, and different in each eye.) (Perhaps that's part of why I prefer night to day. The daytime sky is unpleasant to look at for the same reason, but the night sky is beautiful.) As for your Capclave report, why not submit it to the WSFA Journal? It's longer than I would want to read out loud at a meeting.
