Both of you were at the Gillilands' last night.  If I had known you'd
never met, I would have made a point of introducing you.  (I didn't
read this email until today.)  I hope you did manage to find each
other.  If you did, I'm sure your conversation was cordial.  There's
something about email that makes messages appear much harsher than the
same words spoken would.  I hope everyone takes this into account, and
bends over backwards to compensate, since otherwise this effect is
likely to cause a positive feedback cycle resulting in great acrimony.
