There were, however, trade routes through the wilderness and wells along those routes. There was one miracle where Moses struck a rock and water gushed out. There is also moisture in manna and quailes which are mentioned. Morning dew is mentioned, so there is at least some moisture available. There's a cactus with fruit (nopalitos) which has an inside very much like watermellon.
