It will probably do less damage to the local flora and fauna than the blast
that will occur if the torpedo hits its target. Particularly if the torpedo
is nuclear-tipped...though I think they reserve those for deep subs, not
surface ships, and even if not, this system probably wouldn't activate
anyway as the torpedo wouldn't need to get that close to take out an entire
carrier group.

Of course, unless the opponent is as militarily advanced as we are, there
won't be any torpedoes anyway.  Any possible launch platform will cease to
exist before our ships get close enough (see: Libya), or the weapon will be
detected in a longer transit and destroyed.

I wonder if this system is more useful against swimmers with mines while in
port?  "Look!  A jellyfish with SCUBA tanks!"
