Subject: [WSFA] This list is 44 months old today
Reply-To: WSFA members <WSFAlist at WSFA.org>

This list, intended for the use of past and present members of the
Washington Science Fiction Association, is 3 years 8 months (44
months) old today.

Please keep in mind that there are no tone-of-voice or body language
cues in email, so messages can often appear much blunter than they
were intended. Please interpret messages in the best light possible,
and before sending a message please write it as if it might be read
in the worst light possible. Never post while angry. [This text has
been in the monthly message for the past year, though not always so
near the top.]

To help keep mailboxes from overflowing, and to keep from stuffing
everyone's mailboxes with multiple copies of the same stuff over and
over again, please don't include more of the message you're replying
to than is necessary to establish context. Messages have often
contained ALL of the message they were replying to, which in turn
contained ALL of the message THAT message was replying to, several
levels deep! No matter how wonderful a message is, nobody wants to
get multiple copies of it. Thank you.

Also, please don't forward "PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW"
messages without first personally confirming that the message is both
accurate and timely. Remember, it's your own reputation on the line.

The addresses WSFAlist at WSFA.org and WSFAlist at KeithLynch.net go to the
same list. The WSFAlist at KeithLynch.net address is left over from the
bad old days before we had at WSFA.org email addresses. I've left it
active since I know that some people won't get around to updating
their address books until the end of time.

Please don't post more than one or two paragraphs from any copyrighted
source. Instead, please just post the URL. Thanks.

Archives of this list are at http://www.wsfa.org/list/, mirrored at
http://keithlynch.net/wsfa/list/. Please do not link any public web
pages to these archives, or mention them, or the email address of
this list, on any other mailing list or any newsgroup. Please do not
forward messages sent to this list to anyone except past and present
WSFA members without the permission of the sender. (You're welcome
to mention the *existence* of this list to anyone.)

The archives are indexed by date and by sender, and also include a
list of current subscribers and their email addresses. That list
would be useful in reconstructing this list on another platform if
I'm run over by the proverbial bus.

HTML messages and messages with attachments cannot be posted to the
list, for several reasons, including the fact that they can convey
viruses and web bugs, which can reveal your private information
to others. If your mailer defaults to sending HTML, please see
http://www.expita.com/nomime.html for instructions on how to turn it
off. I suggest you turn it off for everyone, since more and more
people are deleting all such email unread. (The August 2003 Consumer
Reports magazine is one of many sources that recommends deleting HTML
email unread to cut down on spam.)

PLEASE NOTE that since I am busy with my new full-time job, I no
longer round up HTML messages, clean them up, and forward them back to
this list, nor do I inform their senders. We're all adults here, and
we can clean up after ourselves. If, however, the club would prefer
for me to resume this task, I'll do it, but the time for it will come
out of time I could have spent making the WSFA website, minutes, and
Journal better. I mention this because there have been several HTML
messages addressed to the list lately, mostly by long-timers who
should know better. And the senders often haven't noticed that
they didn't show up, nor did they clean them up and resend them.

Any past or present WSFA member can:

* Subscribe to this list.
* Post to this list, even if they're not subscribed. And can do so
  from any email address.
* Read messages in the archives, even if they're not subscribed.

Please don't post anything that you don't want to be seen by all WSFA
members, now and in the future. But don't assume that what you post
here will be seen by all WSFA members, or by any one of them in
particular.

Please don't CC any messages to non-subscribers without a good reason
for each one. WSFAns who aren't subscribed to the list do not wish to
receive email meant for all WSFAns.

Subscribes, unsubscribes, and archive updates are handled manually.
Usually within a day. Except archive updates, which are usually once
or twice a month.

Also see the article about this list in the October 2004 WSFA Journal, at

mirrored at
http://keithlynch.net/wsfa/journal/j04/a/index.htm#wel

60 people have posted 10,036 messages to the list, an average of 8
per day. 2002, 2003, and 2004 averaged 12, 4, and 6 messages per
day respectively. 2005 has averaged 10 messages a day so far. The
average for September 2005 was 4 messages a day, and for October 2005,
8 messages per day so far.

There are currently 49 subscribers, including nine of the ten
officers. Since last month, Tamara Griesel, Lee Gilliland, and Deidre
McLaughlin have subscribed, and Lee Gilliland unsubscribed again after
being on list for two days.

Here are all the past and present subscribers and senders, along with
the number of messages they have sent and their email address. The
email address shown is the one they receive postings on. All past
and present WSFA members (including non-subscribers) can post to the
list from any email address. Email addresses in parentheses are the
address a non-subscriber last posted from, or a former subscriber last
subscribed from, and may no longer be valid addresses.
