When I moved into the place that I live now the guys that I'd hired to help
had no idea that they'd be bringing in so many boxes of books. They were
very kind about sweating up the stairs again and again but as the truck got
closer to empty they began to wonder. Finally one asked if they'd failed
to load the bed and I cheerfully replied that my husband had gotten it, not
me. He stared at me in wonder. "Close to a hundred boxes of books and no
bed?!?"

(I didn't actually sleep on them, though. Three months before, when Dan
broke the news that he was leaving me but not moving out of our apartment
until the lease was up I'd made a pallet from sofa cushions and such so I
could sleep on the floor in the study.)
