JHU Press is publishing "The Great Society Subway - A History of the
Washington Metro"
<http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/title_pages/8842.html>. Having lived in
Northern Virginia from 1962 to 1977 (and in Baltimore since) it brought
back a lot of memories. Schrag looks not just at the building of the
subway, but the history leading up to it. Ah, O. Roy Chaulk, Joel
Broyhill.... memories.

One of the interesting bits of history was whatto name the system. The
wanted to stay away from "El" or subway, both bringing up images of ld
noisy systems. One internat document jokingly suggested "Fedaeral Area
Rapit Transit."
