Yes, it takes a bit more learning to use the internet safely than the
public roads, but failing to learn the required info before venturing out
is equally likely to result in catastrophe, though it's more likely to be
one's computer, or those of one's friends, or even strangers, that becomes
a statistic than one's person, so learning from even serious mistakes is
easier.
