While the conchair has the privilege of choosing whomever they want one of the factors that went into "who I want" was someone who would be good for Capclave. Which, to me, meant that the author should be someone who'd bring in folks who love books and isn't on the East Coast very often. Another factor was that I wanted it to be someone deserving high honor. And I wanted someone who enjoys people and people enjoy being with. Capclave has a rare advantage in that it's small and relaxed. People have a chance to talk with each other including our Guests, and our Guests have a chance to relax and hang out with people. Stan fits all those criteria. The bonus is that he's a person I wanted to have as GoH even if I hadn't been taking all those things into consideration. You introduced me to him over ice cream after he was here for a reading and, while I was very aware of his work and have even given his books as gifts, I hadn't read any of his until then. I've now devoured a number of them as a result of that reading and introduction. And think he's a terrific person. [Plus, as chair of a convention that has him as GoH I now have an excuse for going on a buying spree and get the rest. Despite funds, stacks of books on the floor, the 'to be read' stack needing a bookshelf of its own despite shelving as much of the 'to be read later' as I can, and having to sort and shelve everything so I can pack it up to move in a couple of months. Okay, that's not why I chose him but . . . ] You can't imagine how much I'm looking forward to doing this now that things are settled. And, as I haven't had a chance to say it, thank you. Elspeth
