Sorry for not getting this to folks in time for 1st Friday but there was a
family matter that abruptly got in the way.
There's been some discussion of the color of the '06 website. I know that
sounds trivial but on many monitors it's a rather neon green.
Jan Price may be moving to Atlanta soon, which means that we may need a new
hotel person.
Elaine Brennan and I have talked about programming, including the concept
of the Town Square. (Colleen, could you get the program participant
information from last year to her?) She's willing to handle much of the
programming that goes on there but there absolutely has to be someone to do
the creative stuff.
It may be that we don't have a volunteer for this because I haven't come up
with a good way of describing what needs to be done. I'll work on
that. We also need to set up a committee meeting but I won't bore everyone
here with the date juggling.
We also need a party Tzar to not only help people with supplies but collect
information as to who is interested and juggle the sleeping rooms to get
the best fit with the least chance of noise complaints.
It turns out that our contact at the Hilton has been unavailable. As for
the room rates, "We will guarantee a yearly increase of no more than the
percentage increase in rack, capped by 3% above the 2005 special net
rates" Last year's rates were:
RoomSingle RateDouble RateTriple RateQuad Rate
King Room/Corner Kings $119 single and double, $129 triple and quad
2 Double Beds $119 single and double, $129 triple and quad
King 1 Bedroom Suite w/ Parlor $159 single through quad.
So that needs to be handled.
Michael Nelson has put together some good bios for the two page
flyer. There's been some tiding up on Stan's but it's pretty much what
most of you know. Tom is less well know around here so:
TOM WHITMORE has been a bookseller for over thirty years and a partner in a
bookstore for twenty-nine; The Other Change of Hobbit in Berkeley, California
(otherchangeofhobbit.com). He's been co-chair of a Worldcon (ConJosé in
2002), and implemented the first example of Elevator Party Hosts. He's
been a reviewer for LOCUS, and once made Gene Wolfe jealous by telling him
how much writing reviews for computer magazines paid. He's a massage
therapist and a student of Hakomi. He was on the founding board of the
Cohousing Association in the US, and lived for several years in Puget Ridge
Cohousing. He collected art at cons before discovering that his grandmother
had been a print dealer for most of her life. And he lived in the DC area
twice — once while working in a clerical job at the Library of Congress in
the period of Nixon's impeachment, and once while working for the Office of
Energy Information Validation in the Department of Energy. For stories of
his connection with Aleister Crowley and his peculiar ability to find books,
you'll have to ask in person.
There are certainly other things but a sleeping cat is covering my notes
and has shown no sign of moving other than to open an eye and glare at me
before closing it again.
I'm going to need to be on the road from this Wednesday until after
Boskone, with a brief swing back to DC in the middle of next week. Which
means that I won't be able to be at 3rd Friday. But I will have cell phone
and email so until Boskone starts can keep up on things.
