The Royal Bank of Scotland still issues 1 pound notes. The explanation I received, my recollection is rahter fuzzy since it was at InterThingy and it was late and there had been pints, had something to do with Russians and currency trading. As I said... fuzzy... And just to make life interesting, not all UK currency is exactly legal currency nor is it always accepted in all parts of the UK.
