I think "represented as saying it" is closer to the mark, and I'm not sure
it was a clear resignation anyway.  I think, under the circumstances, that
the other Trustees might want to take at least the action of talking with
Lee to see what the situation is...but that's up to them, and I'd guess
they've already reached that conclusion (or will when they hear about all
this if they haven't yet).
