I believe the family left the Arizona Territory for the New Mexico
Territory, and yes, it was in a Connestoga wagon.

That's unfortunate.  He had been active for longer than any other
writer.  Since he started writing in the 1920s, and continued without
any long gaps, had he lived four more years, he could have had works
published in every named decade (i.e. the '00s, '10s, '20s, '30s, etc.).

He arrived in New Mexico in a covered wagon.  Somewhat more recently,
he was guest of honor at WSFA's World Fantasy Con three years ago,
though unable to attend in person.  WSFA should still have a short
video interview of him that was produced to be shown at that con.
